Investment Strategy

Your investment strategy is very personal to you and will be driven by many factors including your financial needs and objectives, the term over which you are prepared to invest, the risk you are prepared to take and even, perhaps, ethical considerations. Many people find this aspect of financial planning particularly difficult and prefer to work with a financial professional to help them design their own investment strategy.

A cornerstone of your investment strategy is diversification; that is investing across a range of different areas and asset classes (eg equities, property etc) rather than relying just on one to deliver your returns. In addition, people tend to earmark different portions of their money for different purposes, such as:

  • Short-term emergency fund requirements which will need to be in easily accessible deposit accounts
  • Medium-term requirements, such as a new car, a special holiday, funding a wedding (with perhaps a 5 to 10 years’ investment horizon); and
  • Longer-term requirements, such as retirement or estate planning (with a 10+ years’ investment horizon)

The proportion of your capital you place in each category will depend on your personal circumstances, your objectives, the amount of money you have to invest and your attitude to risk.
