It is a new year and resolutions will have been made aplenty – so add reviewing your investments to your agenda." Click here to view the article online.
Andrew Barker, our Chief Operating Officer, was quoted in the Your Money page in The Daily Telegraph (Tuesday 23 November 2010). The article followed research that investors trying to ’time’ the market to chase performance are costing themselves over 1% points a year. Click here to view the article online.
Andrew said: "No one truly knows what will be the next year’s top performing fund, and anyone whose financial adviser tells them that they have a crystal ball and can predict the future is being led down the garden path. The danger of timing the market is that investors are invariably waiting for the markets to move and then jump on the bandwagon, thus missing out much of the growth they would have had by already being invested. Trying to second guess the markets is a fool’s game. The most reliable strategy is to spend time in the market, rather than try and time the market, and to diversify your portfolio."
Eric and Jill Bailey, SFS clients from Kent, appeared as a case study in an IHT article in The Daily Telegraph (Saturday 9 October 2010). Click here to view the article online.
Ian and Valerie Elliot, clients of SFS at the Northwich branch, appeared as a case study in the Daily Mail(Wednesday 15 September 2010) in an article accusing commission-chasing banks and salesmen of selling ’obsolete’ investment bonds two years after tax changes made them unsuitable for most investors. Mr and Mrs Elliot had previously been sold investment bonds by another adviser and have now invested in Isas and unit trusts with SFS. Mrs Elliot was quoted as saying, "When I was told I would have to pay so much tax on any returns, I really couldn’t see the point in these bonds." The article also quoted Andrew Barker, Chief Operating Officer, who said "The lack of transparency of investment bonds makes them much easier to sell and they offer a high commission." The article also stated that SFS stopped selling these bonds after the tax changes were introduced. Click here to view the article online.
